Penn Athletics employs a unique structure where each intercollegiate sport utilizes a board made of up volunteers that act as advocates and stewards for their respective sport. Penn sports boards focus on the areas of mentoring, development, alumni relations, and events as well as strategic planning. The commitment from each of Penn's 18 sports boards plays a vital role in the success of the Department of Recreation and Intercollegiate Athletics.
- There is one board per varsity sport (men’s and women’s basketball are provided oversight by a single board)
- Sports boards are comprised of volunteer alumni, parents and friends of Penn Athletics
- There are in-person meetings, phone calls and other touch points throughout the year that provide a forum for sports board members to stay engaged with Penn Athletics and offer guidance on key issues facing each sport
